VA - David Mancuso Presents The Loft Vol 2

These comps are now long out of print and are fetching 'big bucks' on the used market with some prices I've seen exceeding £200 for a CD! That is a lot of money but almost understandable since a lot of the tracks on this are pretty hard to come by and Nuphonic going bankrupt obviously didn't help. Whats also sad is that these Loft comps were the best selling items in their catalogue supposedly. Sav (one of the owners) went on to start Tirk Recordings however, which is carrying on in the same tradition as Nuphonic and is/has been releasing some excellent stuff which I highly recommend you check out. If you've never heard about David Mancuso, The Loft or some of the great artists/music on these comps before, then hopefully this is a great introduction to go & find out more about them. Enjoy.

Early - CD 1
01 Fred Wesley - House Party (Full Length Version)

07 Sandee - Notice Me

09 Tamiko Jones - Can't Live Without Your Love (Full Length Version)

VA - David Mancuso Presents The Loft

As you know already, I like 'borrowing' other peoples reviews (mainly because mine are shit) . This review on Discogs sums it up nicely: "Both Loft compilations (Vols 1 & 2) are essential pieces of Dance music history containing a wealth of amazing records spanning Disco, Soul, Funk, House, Dub, Disco Not Disco, Electronica, African Funk....They have exposed me to so many artists that I wouldn't have even contemplated or considered coming under the banner of Dance music. That's probably what was so amazing about clubs like The Loft and DJs such as David Mancuso, Larry Levan etc they played and broke great records regardless of their genre. They just had a philosophy of great music that you could dance to. They could drop music with guitars and get people dancing. There is too much pigeon-holing of music these days, going to a club just to check a DJ that plays one narrow style of music, no matter how great he/she is. There is so much fantastic music across the board that clubs should take a leaf out of the Loft's book and get back to basics playing great music regardless of the genre! RESPECT to David Mancuso, Larry Levan and all the DJs who followed in their footsteps."

VA - Serie Noire: Dark Pop And New Beat

Another personal favourite of mine. A superb compilation of Italo-Disco, Electro, Synth-Pop and New Beat compiled & mixed by Mo & Benoelie (aka The Glimmers) & Dirk (Eskimo) . "Serie Noire, an ongoing collection of groundbreaking electronic dance music from the [recent] past, is here to reinstate the value of long-lost dance collectives, producers and bands who once [or repeatedly] hit the mark and proved to be hugely influential for generations to come. Culled from different timezones and non-aligned scenes, the tracks all have the same brooding, ominous feeling about them...fusing cold Kraftwerkian robotic beats with primitive funk, or pasting sinewy squelches onto calculated rhythm patterns, a batch of wayward musicians devised the kind of music that felt strangely detached but couldn't help but get under everyone's skin." Part 2 coming soon.

VA - Journeys By DJ Present Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay: Desert Island Mix

A legendary mix CD compiled by Gilles and Norman back in '97. I believe it was re-released a few years ago though so is easier to come by. Some great tracks on both CD's but I think I'd have to choose Norman Jay's disc 2 mix over Gilles' since the tunes are mostly classics anyway which always stand the test of time better.

VA - Romanian Jazz

Whilst I'm posting the Polish one, heres another great comp in the series. “As if by magic, Jazzanova, Stephan Steigleder and Khidja from Bukarest, Romania, found an unexplored record archive in the east, called Electrecord. None of the names here ring any bell with the average amateur jazz fan, but of course it sounds great. The overall sound is a cocktail of American jazz with a Balkan blend. I'd say it's one of the best jazz compilations on Sonar Kollektiv yet.” Courtesy of beyondjazz.net

VA - DJ Ayres & Cosmo Baker Present Hip House Vol 1

"Thank God for Ayres and Cosmo, who may fall a few shades short of 2 Puerto Ricans, a Dominican and a Black Man, but have certainly Done It Properly with this perfect exposition of Hip House. The prodigal son, a bastard child of hip hop and house, has been welcomed home with open arms on this hour-long mix. For those who may be unfamiliar with the joys of this unjustly neglected genre, what we're talking about is uptempo beats in the 120BPM range topped with rapidfire raps and an anything goes, pre-lawsuit sample mentality. It's the perfect soundtrack to get you pumped up for a night out, I felt like I was back listening to Merlin Bobb's Saturday Night Dance Party on WBLS. This mix is yummy as a slushy, and just as sticky sweet. The fellas have spiked the already potent brew with liberal amounts of current acapellas and re-edits (Ghostface, Joe Buddens, Missy, Kelis and Outkast all make cameos), a logical update of the original idea that shakes any cobwebs off the concept. Kicking off with the ultimate hip house cut, Twin Hype's "Do It To The Crowd," a quick run through of some of the genre classics from well-known rappers follows. Latifah's "Come Into My House" has been a big gun in my house sets for a while, licking shots here alongside nuggets from fast rap masters Craig G, YZ, Special Ed and Rob Base. A short segment that immaculately links megablasts from Aly Us, Mr. Fingers and Marshall Jefferson with the Jungle Brothers' "I'll House You" acapella is nothing short of levitational. If this doesn't get you up, you're a lame loser – go listen to IDM on your headphones. The 41+ high-octane tracks on here mean that I can't name all my favorites, but a special El Poopoo dukey shout goes out for the inclusion of Sugar Bear's rarity "Don't Scandalize Mine" and the Big Daddy Kane DJ feature "The House That Cee Built." By the time Frank Ski starts calling out the "whores in this house" you know it's cuz they're all up on the dancefloor."

VA - DJ Ayres Presents The Rave

"This CD is dead serious! Everyone is saying rave is back and instead of making some jokey shit to cash in on the trend, DJ Ayres digs deep into the vaults and pulls out a set of his favorite dance records, from the late eighties all the way up to 2007! The Rave is a trip through house and techno and acid and ghetto tech and breaks and jungle and drum'n bass and even a trip to the chillout room at the end."

VA - Les Disque Du Crepuscule: From Brussels With Love

I cannot write a review good enough for this LP so heres a stolen one from Boomkat which comes close to describing what a stunning collection of work this is, definately one more for the classical, electronic, ambient, abstract fans out there but I would recommend it to every good music lover since it's such beautiful, timeless music. 'This really is a treat - a brand new re-mastered edition of one of the most elusive, sought-after compilations of all time. I know I have a habit of banging on about how rubbish compilations are (and for the most part, they really are) but occasionally there are one or two which really catch my ear. This isn't one of those occasional compilations either, this particular one is a 'once in a lifetime' affair, the sort of compilation which absolutely never comes to life anymore - it has everything you could possibly ask for. Firstly, every track is a winner... yep no matter what sort of music you're interested in, you have no grounds for criticising one moment on this record, secondly it's all exclusive material. For some reason, the label managed to secure not only a gang of interested (and interesting) artists but managed to procure great material out of them, great exclusive material - something almost unheard of. Thirdly, and one might say most importantly, this is supremely varied with tracks ranging from modern classical to new wave with room in the middle for a couple of 'ambient' interviews. Rarely (especially in 1980 when the comp was originally released on limited edition cassette) do collections of work come this varied and work so perfectly - in fact this sounds like the sort of cd a rabid muso friend might make for you after hours of long, hard thought. The sort of cd you'd listen to and think 'wow this is musical perfection but it would never be released, it's way too risky'. It took Belgian label 'Les Disques du Crepuscule' to actually muster up the courage to put something like this together, and with connections to Manchester's Factory label and also to influential composer Wim Mertens they managed to reign in an unusually large and bizarre sphere of influence. Where else would you be able to hear Gavin Bryars, Harold Budd and Michael Nyman next to Durutti Column, New Order (appearing here with a totally exclusive track, which has never appeared on other collections), Bill Nelson, Belgian no-wavers The Names and Joy Division super-producer Martin Hannett? 'From Brussels with Love' is the most wonderful of things, a disc packed with ideas so fresh and so groundbreaking that they still sound life-changing even today - and without a doubt is the perfect introduction to a label which would influence so many of today's classic independents. To put it simply, this is a music collector's wet dream and one of the most seminal, inspired compilations of all time. ESSENTIAL PURCHASE!' Courtesy of Boomkat
